Hover over these pictures for interesting hidden captions!New Categories: VB.NET Tutorials and Project Management

In this new category, VB.NET Tutorials, I’ll be writing articles that go over the basics of various namespaces and objects with the novice VB.NET programmer in mind. I’m trying to shoot for something more than just a listing of commands and something with a bit more clairity and less dryness than the MSDN entries. Please leave me a comment to let me know how I’m doing with this, if I should have more or less detail, better examples, simplier examples, you got it wrong, you got it right, it is useful, it’s not useful, etc. I appreciate any feedback I get from you either through comments, contact me, or the ratings stars.

I’ve also added a category for Project Management. I’m going to use it for articles that include basic project management while keeping the Development Teams category for those on personel management. Of course, those that overlap both topics will be in both.

Advertising

Yes, the necessary evil.

I dumped the AdGridWork block after about a week because so many of the ads were for unrelated spammy sites, yuck.

As for new ads, I place ads for Vonage internet phone service on the site over this weekend. If you make a lot of long distance phone calls, particularly international ones, this can be a huge money saver for you. I recently switched to their service and I highly recommend them.

Coming Up Next Week

Next week I’m going to write a few more articles on generic collections. Some people new to VB.NET, coming over from VB6 or just new to programming, have expressed an interest in them. I may also have some more tips on Windows or Web services coming up soon.

Maybe I’ll finish up the article on Code Walk-Throughs I’ve been working on soon as well as a few other development team and project management articles.

If there is a topic that you would like for me to cover or if you have anything that I didn’t cover well enough or accurately, please leave me a comment and let me know. Check back often to see what I’m going to talk about or just subscribe to my RSS feed to have it delivered to you by a reader or email.

Site News for 8/13/07 through 8/18/07

Site NewsHere’s the site news for the week of 8/13/07 through 8/18/07. I thought it would be a good idea to do these posts most weekends to let you know what’s going on and where things are headed on this site.

Contact Me Page

I added a Contact Me page today using the Contact Form ][ plug-in by Chip Cuccio. You can use it to send me a message if you like although I prefer that you post a comment on particular articles so that everyone can benefit from the discussion.

Advertising

I’m probably going to be experimenting around with some more advertising placement options and offers over this weekend. I try to seek a good balance on ad placements and I try to find good and useful offers so if you have any comments or suggestions on this, please let me know.

Earlier this week I added a free service, AdGridWork, way down at the bottom of the sidebar. They offer a way to promote your site for free and show ads for related sites on your site. They’re probably worth checking out if you have a site to promote yourself.

Coming Up Next Week

Next week I’m going to conclude my discussion of the System.IO.Path Namespace and I’m planning to write some articles on the generics, most likely on the Stack and Queue types since I’ve been using them recently. Also, since I’m doing a lot of work with Windows Services right now, I’m probably going to be posting more tips and tricks articles for them over the next week or so.

I’m also going to try to finish up an article on Code Walk-Throughs I’ve been working on and Iv’e got a few other development team articles in the works.

If there is a topic that you would like for me to cover or if you have anything that I didn’t cover well enough or accurately, please leave me a comment and let me know. Check back often to see what I’m going to talk about or just subscribe to my RSS feed to have it delivered to you.

Some Site Additions and Stuff

Site ChangesI’ve made a few additions to the site this week, 8-5-07 through 8-20-07, so I thought I’d take a moment to mention them.

Buy Me an Espresso links

I added this PayPal contribution link this week. Even though this site is supported by advertising, I know some people don’t like ads and have them blocked or are leary of clicking on ads, especially at work. If you find this site useful and would like to contribute to this site but you don’t like click on ads or block them entirely, this is a way to do it. I’m not looking to get rich off this site but the ads and this plug-in are a way for me to defray the costs of hosting. The plug-in is a variation on the Buy Me a Beer plug-in.

Sitemap Page

Another addition is the Dagon Design Sitemap Generator. This WordPress plug-in generates a user-friendly site map to help you navigate the site. Click on the Sitemap navigation link button at the top of the page to see the map. Since I have 60 posts with more being added each day, this should help you browse the site more effectively.

Tags and Badges

Way down at the bottom of the page sidebar you’ll see a section for tags and badges. That’s where I have all those goofy widgets that may help people find this site. Check them out if you’re bored.

Site Stats

I’ve finally gotten the stats to work right with this theme so now I’m able to report on the most popular articles of the week:

If you have any questions or comments about this site, please feel free to leave them here.

A Few More Site Changes

A Few More ChangesI’ve made a few more changes to the site today.

First, you may have noticed that I’ve placed the full article on the front page rather than just an excerpt. Although my articles are usually long, I’ve heard that some people prefer to have everything on one page. Also, doing it this way allows my RSS feeds to be full, rather than partial. For now, the 5 most recently published full articles will appear on the front page. Let me know if you like this change.

While I’ve had them from the start on individual pages, I also have added the post rating and social bookmarking icons to the front page as well. If you enjoyed an article, please leave a rating for it. If you didn’t, please don’t, just kidding, but if you didn’t like an article or saw a problem with it please leave me a comment as well.

And finally, a note on one of my sponsors, Auction Ads. They’re a new service that plugs into eBay and shows items that are currently up for sale. On my pages, I picked “Visual Basic” as the keyword so that you should, in theory, see a list of auctions for VB related items. I know a lot of people look for old copies of VB6 and earlier and hopefully these ads will give you a heads up on them. Unfortunately, Auction Ads is having growing pains so you may see purses, iPods and the infamous Legos and teddy bears instead unless you refresh the page. Hopefully they’ll get this cleared up soon.

As always, I appreciate any suggestions or questions you might have so feel free to leave me a comment.

Pardon Our Dust

I’m in the process of switching the site over to using WordPress. I think everything has been copied over and is accessible but if you notice anything missing or if something doesn’t look right, please leave me a comment here.
